Turn off your flash. Using the natural light will make it easier to see.

Will the Navel Jelly totally remove the black spots? Most of my roof had surface rust caused from water getting under the vinyl top. Now it is bare metal with black spots. I used that Oxi stuff from Eastwood and it changed some of the iron oxide to zinc oxide. Do I need to remove the zinc oxide also or would that be considered neutralized or removal of the rust? Nothing is loose and it passes the white rag test.

Remove the black spots.

Yes, Naval Jelly will work, but it may take many applications of it.
Use a wire wheel on a reversible drill after every application. Reverse the rotation of the wheel often so the bristles don't bend in one direction.

Poke the remaining pits with a scratch awl to make sure there are no pin holes.
If there are, then weld them up with a MIG and grind smooth.
Afterwards, sand the area with 80 grit, clean the area and cover with 2 coats of an epoxy primer.

get with the times

Soda-Blasting is the only way to remove surface rust! Less work, no clean-up, earth friendly, and cheap.

If it were that good, don't you think the pros would be doing it?
Better read up. Try a search, there is been much posted on this forum about it.

The black spots most likely are holes, from what ive seen in the past. Why convert the rust when you can remove it?As far as the guy that says get with the program, sodablasting is great,if you have access to the process, most people dont.As stated in my post earlier, ive used Captain Lees rust remover in the past and it works for me.It dissolves ALL of the rust and leaves virgin metal. The last time I needed to dissolve some rust on the floor of one of my cars I used electrolite, battery acid.Worked like a charm.

i got naval jelly from autovalue here in canada just a auto parts store in there little autobody supply shelf, $4.44 for a bottle. its called permax rust disolver i think. seems to work pretty good.

DA is a DUAL ACTION air sander.

i used this stuff and after i wash it down with the hot soapy water it somtimes goes blueish and somtimes it goes yellowish, when it goes yellowish is it starting to rust again? i wipe it down with paper towel and spray air on it fast as i can to dry it.

I've picked up naval jelly at Rural King (farm supply store). Any similar store or an auto parts store should have some. I've seen the turning bluish but not the yellowish. Does it do the yellow right away or after a period of time. If so may well be rust.

I picked some up at Lowe’s Home improvement store and it was thinker than the Permetex brand stuff I had. I also think it was a stronger solution.

I posted about the black spots but this was actually the marker I used in the dent removal process that Randy describes. Sorry for not following up.

Navel Jelly works,it just takes awhile to work.Mix it 50-50 with electrolyte, battery acid and it speeds up the process. As stated earlier, soda blasting is great but its overkill if you can do the job yourself.Ive done the roof and floors of my cars with acid and it works. As far as converting rust, why.Remove it.The secret with using acid is you have to keep the area wet, once it dries its not working. As far as the yellow tint on bare metal, this is rust caused by moister on the surface.I stripped the quarter on a Cadillac last winter and it stayed outside for a month before I got a chance to shot a coat of primer.Id go out once a week and scrub the quarter with soap and water and a scuff pad,it was fine.

This is an excellent thread.

I have been patching holes in the upper quarter of my 41 chevy. Problem is, I do great for a short period, then my welding seems to go to the dogs. So when things start going wrong, I try to find something else to do. Yesterday, I started working on pitted rust sections.

Question. Has anyone done side by side comparisons of products such as Naval Jelly, Oxisolve, etc. Fastest acting, cleans pits best, quickest, etc.
