Seems Best way to Buy a 454 BB is to Buy a Truck

Ok I just bought a 79 vette in real nice condition I want to remove the wimpy 350 and replace it with a 454. In looking around the Toronto area there are no 454 engines for sale, but I have located a few GMC trucks with 454 and the best part is I can buy the whole truck for $500. I take the engine and trany out and scrap the truck. Is there a difference between a truck and car 454 engines. I read some where that the truck engine is a Tall Block " so what does that mean. Thank-you for your feed-back

most truck blocks are 4 bolt mains, but I'm not sure on the "tall" part.
I wouldn't reffer to the 350 as wimpy though...

454 chevy pickup engines are the same as passenger car engines externally, they have different heads and intake in some instances. The tall deck engines are found in Heavy Duty trucks such as dumps, refuse haulers, school buss etc.
Yes buying the entire pickup is the way to go when trying to find 454 cores. In Michigan most all of these mid seventies to early eighties trucks are on their last runs because of body rust and poor gas milage. You can pick them up for as little as $250.00 and pull the engine and 400 turbo. Replace the heads on the rebuild and you have a great engine and trans combo.
I might add that if you have any friends that work in the truck repair shops, you can get old tall decks for cheap. We just picked up a crate warranty 427 and a 496(series 7) complete engines for $75.00 each. The 427 had low oil pressure (bad spring in oil pump) and the 496(we thought it was a 502) had a spun rod on number 5 cyl. Both easy fixes .
Most of the pickup blocks are two bolt! Not a problem.

Thank-you for your very informed feed-back. I will go ahead and buy the GMC 1/2 ton and do what you suggested.
