Setting Carrier Bearing Preload

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE CORRECT PROCEDURE FOR SETTING CARRIER BEARING PRELOAD. WHEN I TOOK MY 12 BOLT PASS REAR APART TO R+R THE RING+PINION. THE CARRIER BEARING SHIMS WERE ALMOST CHEWED IN HALF BY THE AXLE. THANX

Its a feel thing. You dont want to beat the carrier in but you also dont want it to fall in.
