setting ignition timing

hello everyone,
i am new to engine tuning and was wondering how to set both initial timing as well as advanced timing. I have a dial back timing light.
My set up is a 383 with MSD 6A, pro billet distrib, 4 spd, chevelle.
I would appreciate any help in detailed as i am new to this. Gotta start somewhere please.
