Setting My Thrust Bearing and Clearance / Ford 289

Hello folks,
I have tom monroes book and understand the process to seat the thrust bearing. I have pryed the shaft for and aft several time and even rapped on the front and rear of the crank with a block and hammer. I am checking clearance with a feeler guage. Tom Monroes, How to Rebuild your Small Block Ford, says to pry the crank forward then check clearance. Should be .004-.008. The most I can get on either side is .003 with the other side being .0015 at the same time. Total clearance is .0045. I am thinking the assembly lube is what won't let me get it any farther forward or aft.

So am I good with a total of .045, or does it have to be at least .004 on one side?

Thanks.

By the way, I have all the caps torqued to 65lbs and have set the thrust bearing, loosened now to finger tight. I believe I am doing things correctly.

Your clearance of .0045 is perfect, and shows almost zero wear on the thrust surfaces of the crankshaft. If the crankshaft's thrust surface is smooth and flat you will not have any problem with this clearance.

Thanks saavy...

Just to feed my obsessive nature though, again, it is total .0045.
.003 one side and .0015 on the other. And yes i had the crank polished and balanced and my guy said it was in excellent condition. Std bearings.

So i'm good, just want to make sure?

Thanks again.

Alright, just went outside and gave the crank a couple more raps and a good pry and I was able to get the.004 feeler in the one side.

Think I'm good. Torqued everything up. On to the pistons.

Thanks again.
