Post Shadetree 327 timing?

67 327 w/petronic & 650 Holley 135K miles why do I hav to set initial timimg at about 20 degrees advanced to keep from backfiring thru carb. Tried 10 deg. Eng never been apart, could timimg chain/gears be bad?

could be bad distrib, possibly the wrong balancer or the outer ring has spun (very common problem)on your balancer.

You could also have the distributor off a tooth or two. Did you remove it when installing the Pertronix setup? As long as it's running good, I wouldn't worry much about what timing it is set to. I always set timing by ear after initial anyway!

recheck your distributor that its sitting in the proper tooth,look at the weights on your advance to make sure there are not stuck.if your to far advance just by a little you will have detanation evan if you cant hear it you will destroy your engine slowly
