sheet metal questiuon
well i will be buying 20 gauge metal sheet to shave some stuff .. but i call to the local metal sheet provider and they say they have just galvanized and black sheet metal. i know galvanized is not suitable for this but ..Is black the one to use??

Bee4Me 06-09-2006 11:38 AM

Yes, It's bare steel with a "scale" finish that needs sanding off to weld or paint.
You can use galvanized as well for smaller patch panels and such. Use some muratic acid to eat the galvanize off and wash it thouroughly with water and a little baking soda to nuteralize the acid. It'll flash rust fairly quick though.

thnks then i going to buy the full sheet of black laminate

You don't have an old hood laying around? If not, a bent hood or decklid is cheap at a junkyard.

If it were me, I would try and get cold rolled Steel-I believe the "black" stuff they have is Hot Rolled-it's not a lot of fun to get the black coating off-

Keep looking for other sources!!

Hot rolled will take forever to get it off. By the time you are done, its 22-24 gauge!

Galvanized isn't the answer either.

A sheet metal shop I used to buy from called cold rolled steel "black steel"...check to see if this is the case where you are going.

I've never heard the term black sheet metal but I wouldn't think it would be hot rolled. I used to run a steel slitter and never saw hot rolled steel that was that thin. I'm not saying it couldn't be hot rolled but after working with steel for 22 years and not seeing any that thin I would have to doubt it. I also agree if it is hot rolled that it would be better to stay away from it.

so.. a cold rolled one is the one to look for ?

Kampr 06-09-2006 08:51 PM

The cold rolled steel would be the best. It has a much smoother texture than hot rolled. Hot rolled would have a real dull look to it.

home depot and lowes carry it around here or go to

even with shipping they are cheaper then HD or lowes

Unless I see a need for a full sheet I would just use a piece of metal from an old car body or hood..Shaving door handles only requires a small piece of metal..
