shift kit and rebuild indication

I aquired a tranny and the guy said it has shift kits. well tonight i open the pan and i can see where someone has drilled some holes bigger and there was only 2 balls is that common? btw the tranny had a large tci sticker on the top of the tranny. I checked the fluid and there was some shavings but how can i tell for sure if it needs rebuild? Does the tci shift kit have only two balls it came with a 1800 stall. Could u help me determine if this tranny has a shift kit. what are some other clues

Reword what i am asking

What i am trying to ask is if theres a way to determine if a 350 turbo needs a rebuilt while out of vehicle? Also I am wondering if 2 balls in the valve body is heard of? I know three usually with a shift kit and 5 orignal.(I think)

I know when I installed my shift kit it only had 3 balls, and still has 3 with shift kit. also a th350 from 70's. I thought it was 1 ball per gear though, was just estimated guess for me though, but made sense to me.

But ya, 3 in mine

Remove the pump for a proper inspection of the internals is a better way to determine of a rebuild is needed.

there are 4 check balls in a non lock up t-350, 5 in a lock up design t-350c

Check balls perform a function as the name applies.. they stop fluild flow through a hole.

Check ball may direct fluid in one direction in a bath tub shaped cavitiy in the trans with two holes located over this cavity.

A t-350 needs only 1 check ball to operate an automatic shifting trans.. Getting into custom built valve bodys and there may be no check balls used

Thanks guys, i apprechiate you guys replying. I will pull the pump out but if i do that, will i be able to put it back in without a problem? I want to take it complete to a tranny shop. So two balls and if there holes drilled out then i do have a shift i wonder if theres a way to know exactly what i have? Also when pulling this pump off what are some things i need to know and also what am i looking for?
