shifting problem

The 1961 Chevrolet truck with th350 does not shift. I shift to reverse and the truck moves. When i shift to 1 2 3 and drive there is no movement of the car no matter how much i rev the engine. My dad had the truck towed to a transmission shop and they determined the transmission needs to be rebuilt.
The transmission has a vaccum valve attached to it and has a 90 degree rubber bend and a metal line from the 90 bend to just about the distributer and a rubber line to the intake manifold. Vaccum is at 19 at idle. God Bless.
