Shimming starter help needed

How do you get the starter gear out into flywheel to measure gap? Was told to insert screwdriver in small slot in bottom of nose to push starter drive out - doesn't seem to work.

a 8" one works best. insert it into the nose under the srarter and get the tip bhind the gear and useing the case as fulcrum(pry against) pry the gear toward the ring gear . it will spin a little as it works op the worm gear.
Have u researched this site for info on this as there is a bunch of threads on the 350 th and not that old. seems like a bunch of us were going thru it at the same time.

TiMeWaRp,

I disconnect the positive battery cable at the battery. Then I run a jumper wire down from the positive battery post to the solenoid and connect it to the "start" terminal. This causes the starter gear to come out against the flywheel ring gear. Then you have both hands to do the measuring. Once you have the measurment disconnect the jumper wire and install shims as needed. Then reconnect the jumper wire to double check the clearance. When everything "checks-out" disconnect the jumper and reconnect the battery cable.

Have Fun
Scholman

It's the small one closest to the driver's side, marked S in the diagram.
