shiny carbon...why??

i blew a head gasket between two cylinders...thus lost NEARLY all compression in both cylinders. i took the head off and noticed those two chambers on the head had shiny carbon residue and opposed to the burnt faded carbon like the rest of them. what is this due to? obviously a chemical reaction, i thought maybe since the cylinders werent getting hot enough? im curious... thanks.
