shock location?

51 chevy truck, 10 bolt posi 342 gears..

I am at the point of doing the rear...any suggestions as to where to mount shocks?
1- both to the front, frame
2- both to the rear, frame
3- both to rear cross member(what angle?)
4-staggered.

both to front or rear frame is easiest, and if it really does not matter, then how far in front of rear end should I attach? or angle?

Staggered was introduced to reduce axle-hop. Left, driver side to the rear, right, passenger side to the front. Angles? I don't know.

shock location

I used the chassis engineering kit for my 51 chev and it mounts the shocks on a supplied crossmember and puts them behind the rear end.

Shocks and leverage

Use the factory mounts as much as possible, unless you are after something special, like changing to a complete traction setup... Remember this, the more leverage you use on the shock, the harder it works... Where do you want the leverage, to the soft ride? or the stiff ride? the forward mounting and the greater the angle, the softer the ride and the less Distance the shock has to (travel) work... Behind the rear end, the more it works and the more straight up and down it is mounted, the harder it works, = stiffer ride... Pickups are designed to have a load in the bed, so they are by nature stiff riding unloaded, if you are NOT going to load it up for 90% of the time and just want it for a cruiser, then thing softer than the stock setup, take at least 1 or 2 leaves and custom fit then, by cutting them at the rear of the U bolt mount, so that they are left whole in the front and you end up with a softer spring to the rear side only, this will help with keeping the spring stiffer in the front, acting somewhat like traction bars... Check out the Dodge cars that had the big engine, the springs were real thick (maybe 7 leaves) in the front and maybe only 3 or 4 leaves to the rear, this was a build in traction setup... BTDT Good luck, testing is the best way to end up with just what you want...

your stock frame mounts them to the outside of the frame with pads under teh spring perch.
gives great angle and keeps things clear for exhaust and so forth.
I use a spare tire in stock location on all my hot rods so if you want shocks inboard(less effective) then put in front of axle.

ideal location for shocks would be right in the middle of the tire bolted to the center of the wheel... but then of course your tire would have a huge hole in it and wouldnt inflate......

in my panel I used OEM 73-81 camaro/nova/skylark rear shock mounts under spring perch. on my panel I created a set just like it but ran double air shocks(back WAYYY before airbags were on anything except political stages...)
on my 52 they were both outboard in stock spots and worked great.
