There has already been a lot of good information about shop lighting but I would like to add one that has to do with safety. Do not mount flourecent fixtures directly to any wooden parts of your shop. The non electronic ballasts can get very hot and over years can dry out wood to the point of combustion. A friend of mine almost lost his shop because of this, lucky for him the fire department was johny on the spot and saved the building. Another thing to think about is add a set of smoke detectors and wire the alarm into your house. Better safe than loosing a cool ride to fire.
