Should I buy this super T10?

I have found a super T10 locally and cam considering buying it. The casting numbers are 13-04-065903. The guy claims it to be from a 396 chevelle. It has an aluminum case and comes with the yoke and slighlty used clutch. The ratios are 2.43,1.61,1.23,1.00. I have a 66 nova with a goal of a streetable mid 12 car seeing mostly street time. What should I do?

It may have been in a 396 Chevelle, but all 4 spd 396 Chevelles were equipped with Muncie four speeds as produced.

I would pull the side cover and inspect the syvchro teeth and sliders. Also the condition of the gear "dog" teeth and the actual synchro sliders. Then check for ANY trash in the bottom..

All but the very first production Super T-10's (early seventies). Had fine spline input shafts and the turbo 400 large rear spline. This may have changed in the later models tho. By then I was not into manual trannies.

I had one of the first 500 made (circa 1970-71) and it solved the crunched trans problems I was having. It was regular chevy input and output shaft.

A regular T-10 was built during the sixties but was not near as strong as the Super T. It was basically an old three speed with reverse moved into the tail section..
