Should I buy this tranny?

I have an opportunity to buy a TH400 for $50. Reverse is out and it slips slightly in drive. Not sure which gear exactly tho.
It's currently in a 4WD truck, and if purchased, will be going into a RWD. Am I correct to assume that I will need to change tailshafts?

I do have a TH350 that has been built to handle up to 500hp (not sure about tq) with 5000 miles on it. I pulled the pan, and found about 1/8 inch of brass/copper??? "paste" covering the bottom of the pan. I will need to switch this to a 6" tailshaft. It currently has a 9".

What to do? The motor that will be sitting in front will be a 400 SBC running around 450hp and 475-500tq (guesstimate)

Hi,
Both transmissions need to be
rebuilt, I think I would opt for the
350, isn't your frame drilled to
move the cross member forward?
Yes to the 400 tail-shaft question.
Good luck,
rich

Then I would need driveshaft modifications. I think it's a solid plan. I need to tear it apart to change tailshafts anyway so a 350 rebuild would make the most sense.

Thanks for the input!

Hi,
When we had the salvage yard I would
separate the drive shafts by mfg. gm, ford, chrys,
that allowed customers to find the correct length
some needed the yoke changed, a five minute job
I sold them for $15.
Take care,
rich
