Should I cut my Inner door skin off?
I have my passenger side door off the car right now. I cut off the bottom section fo the door to replace the metal b/c it had sever rust damage.
Now, that I have looked at thigns in more depth I can see that the INSIDE of the door skin has tons fo rust and junk built up on it. I'm really weird about seeing that and I have almost cut out all of the rust on the rest of the car, b.c it makes me nervous.
So my question is. Do i dare cut a section of this door out so that I can grind off the rust and gunk THEN coat it with some rust inhibitor?
My concern is: I won't be able to realign thigns when I try and put it all back together.
I have attached this picture of what the door looks like, although you cant see the rust in this picture. Again,t he rust is in the inside. BUT IT HAS NOT eaten throw the exterior side of the door.
This next picture is where I was THINKING of making my cut to put the skin and clean up in there. What do you think? Would you make your cuts somewhere else?
Maybe take it to a metal dipper and get it tanked instead?
Any more feedback? I'd really like to get some pointers before I go crazy and start cutting things open
Oldfool has a point, but I'm not big on dipping. You haven't mentioned the age of this Car-can you get a complete outer Door Skin? If not, yes, you can cut out the inner structure, media blast, Ospho or whichever rust removal tool you prefer, then I would Epoxy Prime it, it will last forever. On my Car, I painted the inside of the Doors, then welded them back together, then I just poured some Epoxy in the Door cavity and shloshed it around into the seams-
If confronted with that sort of thing I would not cut the inner..I would R&R the outer skin..difficult to get one back straight if the inner is cut..but that is just my opinion..
The car is a 1954 Chevrolet 2dr. sedan. I'm really leaning towards cutting the skin offto clean everything, I need to find a real thin cutting blade to avoid taking off excess material.
It would be greeat if I could find an outer door skin, because I have some rust damage, which ate through the metal and a good size dent that would make it easy to fix.
anyone know where i can find a door skin for my 54 chevy 2dr.sedan
I'm gonna do some body work first before I do the door to give me some time to think about how I want to do things.
Without a real examination (in person), i8t is hard to say if you need to remove the inner panel, but if you do, it is an easy project.
I cut pieces of my inner door panels off in order to properly hammer and dolly the welds on my (lower only) door skins.
If you are a fair welder and have a mig, it wont take a full day to weld the panel back in.
If it makes you more comfortable with your repair I say go for it. Just don't cut clean to the edge and there is no downside apart from the time you spend.
Oh, I just used a regular (1/16th ?) cutting wheel, it worked fine.
You might check EMS for a door panel.
<<edit EMS does not have door skins, sorry! They do make some other parts you might need though.)
