I am running a 78 monte carlo in a hobby stock class at our local dirt track, and we have to run a 2 barrel carb, but we can run a 4 barrel intake. I was just wondering if i would be better off sticking with a 2 barrel or should i run the 4 barrel intake like everyone else does. Everyone takes a 4 barrel and mills it all open like a dual plane. We cut one today and we were wondering if we opened up a 2 barrel intake if it would flow better than the 4 barrel.
Thanks
Tim
The only two barrel intakes available are factory types and they usually are poor from a distribution perspective. The aftermarket four barrel intake with two barrel adapter is pretty well the best you can get and will make more power from your combination than any other. One thing you might consider is adding epoxy to reduce the interior volume of your 4 barrel intake plenum, this will increase mixture velocity and build you more power everywhere in the power range. An open plane intake is the best starting point rather than trying to open up a dual plane intake, you can always reduce interior plenum volume.
Where to put the epoxy? That's what flowbenches are for, I would start by building up the floor of the plenum and then look at the short side radius.
Holley made a 2 barrel carb that does what you want , use an adapter and a 4bbl intake the air velosity is much faster with a 2 bbl giving you more throttle responce out of the corners,
