should mechanical fuel pump be primed?

I'm restoring a 64 GTO. New gas tank, fuel lines and I rebuilt the stock mechanical fuel pump. It's not pumping gas to the carbs and I wonder if I should siphon gas to fill the new fuel line to ensure the pump is getting fuel.

The pump and fuel lines should self prime. Disable the spark 12v power and kick over the engine for 30sec bursts for a few times. It takes a bit to fill the system the first time. It will fill. Did you install the push rod?

The Pontiac uses an eccentric bolted to the nose of the cam and a self-contained arm on the fuel pump- no p-rod needed.
