Show of hands - Who wishes this was your sheriff (or mountie)?

Sheriff Joe Arpaio (in Phoenix Arizona) is doing it RIGHT!!:

•He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.

He stopped all smoking and porno magazines in the jails, took away their weights, cut off all but "G" rated movies.

•He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects. Then he started chain gangs for women so he wouldn't get sued for discrimination.
•He took away cable TV until he found out there was a federal court order that required cable TV for jails. So he hooked up the cable TV again but only let in the Disney channel and the weather channel. When asked why the weather channel he replied, so they will know how hot it's gonna be while they are working on my chain gangs.

•He cut off coffee since it has zero nutritional value. When the inmates complained, he told them..... (this is a good one)......"This isn't the Ritz/Carlton. If you don't like it, don't come back."

•He bought Newt Gingrich' lecture series on videotape that he pipes into the jails. When asked by a reporter if he had any lecture series by a Democrat, he replied that a democratic lecture series might explain why a lot of the inmates were in his jails in the first place.

•With temperatures being even hotter than usual in Phoenix (116 degrees just set a new record), the Associated Press reports: About 2,000 inmates living in a barbed-wire-surrounded tent encampment at the Maricopa County Jail have been given permission to strip down to their government-issued pink boxer shorts. On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers were either curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached 138 degrees inside the week before.
Many were also swathed in wet, pink towels as sweat collected on their chests and dripped down to their pink socks. "It feels like we are in a furnace," said James Zanzot, an inmate who has lived in the tents for 1 1/2 years. "It's inhumane."
Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates: "It's 120 degrees in Iraq and our soldiers are living in tents too, and they have to wear full battle gear, but they didn't commit any crimes . . so shut your damned mouths."

I like the Disney Channel!
Hope those guys don't get to excited over "The Little Mermaid". Might mess up their pink shorts.

We need someone like him around here, they just released 145 from the county jail last nite because of overcrouding, and more to be released today, It don't get 120 * here, so a tent city would be great, even a fenced in area with out tents would be fine, Bill

I think imprisonment should be harsh, but, however, the extreme heat you mentioned would probably be beyond cruel and unusaul punishment. I have to believe that even prisoners are still human beings, and that it is true incarceration should be harsh, but, we have to remember that all citizens are guaranteed certain rights.

This whole issue probably does hinge on our gurantees against cruel and unusual punishment. I suppose as long as everyone has the proper medical attention and the necessities they need to survive it would be a fit enough environment. I could see, however how people could become abused, particularly if the public views this sort of thing as a good deal.
If I were doing 3 years for some small crime, and everyone else in the country were serving time in a better envronment, then that to me, would institute something as unusual, and probably against the constitution.

How about for someone who raped your mother or sister, or took a joy ride in your car and totaled it, or set fire to your house and burned it and everything you own to the ground, or got hold of your instant teller info and cleaned out your checking and savings accounts? Sheriff Arpaio has been at it long enough (way over 10 years as I recall) that he has definitely complied with all civil rights and constitutional requirements. As he says, if you don't like it, don't come back! That is exactly how incarceration should affect a criminal.

truth of the matter is....

prisoners have it better than we do. if you discount the wanting to do anything not listed below factor...
  • they have free room and board, in an air conditioned environment.
  • they have full medical benefits available around the clock.
  • they can get a free education. even college courses.
  • they can get whatever controlled substance they want.
  • they can even find a ho' in jail. and i'm not talking about a man ho.
  • if they get caught with any prohibited item, what are we gonna do? send them to the pen?

makes me wonder sometimes why i bust my *** so hard to stay "free".......

it's my experience, that they DO have it better in jail than on the street. it ought not to be that way.

ask me how i know.

Hell there are flaws in every system, but what is the alternative? Let them all go and hope they don't screw up again? Fact is, the vast majority of them are "Innocent!" Yeah right. They deserve to be there because they're dirtbags.

Well I dont mean let them stay at a 5 star hotel, but outside in the heat?!?! Thats to much. Maybe it's just me cause I hate the heat, but thats inhumane. How many have died from sun stroke? Or do they keep them alive just to suffer? I would have hanged myself if I had spent a 138 deg day in the sun.

Give em the std. An air cond. cell, dont have to have a TV, radio is fine. The point is to "rehabilitate them" (which even I know will never happen), not make them worse than when they went in. I think they should make them go into the military, send em to paris island Or give them an education and see if they can get educated in some sort of field. Not everyone wants to be an *******, but not everyone wants to be nice
