Show Me Your Powdercoated Parts

Whilst reading into powdercoating for my chassis I've started hearing about "special" finishes that people have done, such as metallics and multiple layers etc....

So, with that in mind, has anyone got any custom powdercoating they'd like to share pictures of?

Thanks all

well, the cell phone pic sucks, its doing this color no justice at all, its making them look blue!
these wheels are translucent purple (its called "lolly pop"), we had them put it over silver metallic to make it darker.
they would usually put it over near chrome.
the color changes from light to dark, depending on how much light there is, and they really pop in the sun.

while these are nothing special.
i did powdercoat them in my garage.
i bought a powdercoat system from eastwoods and it has held up well.
i powdercoated my wheels, engine accessory brackets (home fab),
diff cover and any other bracket i made.
i did my wheels yrs ago as i worked on the frame/body.
i set my spare out in the weather to see how it would hold up to the weather
6 yrs, no fade, no rust.

my oven is a 30'' electric oven, my spray booth is a tv box on top of the oven.
any thing that fits in the box will fit in the oven and gets powdercoated

i really need to get an engine bay pic...

Thanks guys

Has anyone got any close ups or pics of custom finishes?

I'd quite like to see the quality of finish you get

And I've recently heard about candy powders and coating over chrome
Has anyone got any pictures of this?

Thanks

we did a bike frame, the same black with rainbow sparkles, as those wiper arms.
it looked great in the sun.
the powder coater i use has tons of chips and samples for you to look at, and to take home.

callmej75 01-06-2011 08:44 PM

That multicolor flake looked interesting...but the one with the black base and shimmering blue metallics really moved under fluorescents and daylight! I use to make chips but most of them were experimenting with various fluid reaction to the powder to be able to guarantee the work.

Only thing with powder coating is the prep work just like wet painting. Use a pretreatment after blasting and it will stick tight to the metal. I use to do ball peen hammer tests to my sample chips and the powder just crushed into the metal and never flaked or cracked a bit.

When I get my engine work done, I'm gonna powder coat the block and heads and see how good that stands up. I also have a 6'x3'x3' oven I built and it cooks the powder nicely.

Thanks everyone
Definitely given me something to think about

What kind of finish can I get from powdercoating?
Will it give me that wet look that possible from a good paint job?

Thanks

matts37chev 01-08-2011 01:22 PM

it depends on the color, and the amount of gloss in it, and you can have clear gloss put over most colors to protect them (but sometimes you will lose the effect of some of the more interesting metallics etc.)
but the short answer is yes
you really just need to go see some samples in person at a shop

Thanks

Most of the powdercoating I've seen before has left me feeling disappointed
Poor coverage, and bad finish, with chips all over it

The pictures above have confirmed that it can be done well

As the car is my first project I've been told to paint it a single stage colour
I'm currently thinking about going red, and going overboard with it

If I do go with a flat red colour, should I clear over my powdercoated frame?
I guess it won't have any adverse affect to the finish, and would add additional protection?

if you use a standard color (no metallic or translucent, etc) you can use a high gloss red and then put a coat of clear over it for protection and to add depth to the color
we did that on my wife's quad frame and it looks great
this is a poor pic and the quad needs washed but you get the idea

ant_8u 01-09-2011 04:15 AM

I guess that's the kind of vehicle that'd get stone chips if ever there was one

How's it holding up?

When I post on the forums for my cars marque a lot of them say powdercoating comes off in sheets when it gets chipped

Having said that, their standard of finish is usually pretty poor

Everyone on here has said coating if fine and that like everything, the finish is all down to the prep

ant_8u 01-09-2011 04:38 AM

I'm just about to clean up my brake and clutch master cylinders, as the alloy has oxidised

What if anything should I do to protect them?

Clear top coat, clear powder, or leave them bare?
