Big Block Heads

Along with the 454 short block I just picked up, I also obtained a set of #346236 castings (peanut head castings?). From what I have read, these are decent for torque motors up to about 4000 RPM. Other than that, I guess they might be good for holding the side garage door open? Any comments on them?

Additionally from what I have been able to research, the 049 or 781 castings are the best factory oval port big block Chevy heads. I would appreciate any feedback anyone can give me on these casting numbers as well.

Thanks.

heads

The 049/781 heads will walk over those peanut port heads in any application including the torque engine..

Thanks Keith. I appreciate your input. Just didn't know if the peanut heads were worth anything at all. Your reply confirmed my suspicions. I'll be looking over Ebay and locally for some of the 049 /781 castings or rectangular port heads.

Another option is the Brodix Race Rite line, oval or rectangular port,of heads. The exhaust ports are in the stock location and all stock accesories bolt on and stock fasteners can be used.

hey 31, forget the peanut port heads, they are only good for doorstops. the rectangular port heads are way lazy for torque. try to find a set of 60s, oval port, closed chamber pre smog heads-they will make your engine happy!!!...

I would use peanuts on a 396 cid in a 4500 pound 1973 impala using a 200 degree duration cam and 2.73 gears. Other than that, there good for choking hp and maybe increasing mpg a little.
