355 block... small crack

i have this crack on the passenger side of the block where the starter bolts up too... the crack goes down about 1/8in... i just saw after cleaning the block ill be taking it to the machine shop to get it hot tanked and a hone job so i was wondering if the machine shop could fix this and if not does it really pose a danger as in the starter not being secured properly...

Unfortunately this is a common problem. Most of the time it's because the rear starter brace has been removed & or the wrong mounting bolts are used that don't have the knurled shank. The crack isn't easy to fix either. I seen people weld studs in, weld the block and the easier fix is to use a long stud or bolt that will reach all the way thru with a nut on top. The top isn't flat tho' so a bevel nut was used, may have been in a post by (OldBogie). There was a link to the type of nut needed. Try doing a search for (starter crack) (mount crack) etc...

The secret to fixing the problem is Silicon Bronze. I have repaired these type cracks and even blocks with the entire ear gone.
