305 Harmonic Balancer - Again

Got a new balancer, now im trying to get it installed. Purchased a long grade 8 bolt and a box of washers (all the correct size of course) and am using it to press the balancer on. The balancer doesnt go on enough to use the normal bolt to push it on with and plus i wanted some extra length so it would go further in the threads so maybe they wouldnt pull out of the crank. Id be screwed, then. Engine is already in the truck now. Anyways i am using the water pump pulley off of a 454, which i dont think is the problem but you never know. It appears the balancer needs to come in another 1/4" But i cant get it to move anymore. The torque on that bolt is already at 80ft lb and its not pushing on anymore. Do i need to see if i can rent that special tool or what? (I would think it would work the same way as the bolt trick that i am using) Im getting a lil crabby with this thing. Guess this is why people hate 305s. I am wishing i had bought a Vortec 4.3 instead.

You need to shim the pump pulley out or get the correct one. 80ft.lbs it should be bottomed out against the crank.

Yea i figured. Cheap harbor freight torque wrench could be inaccurate too. I think I read 85 ft lb on that bolt in some cases but i wasnt gonna push it any further than 80. Thats why i stopped there. No i dont think its bottomed out but i can try a few more washers between the face and the head of the bolt and try it out.

Is it possible the BB pulley is the problem, and not the balancer being out too far?

Its the right pump, just might not be the right pulley.

i keep a longer grade 8 bolt for the balancer installation here

at first use spacer nuts and or washers

then once you gt it on pretty good you can go to the stock bolt and finish it up

with the impact gun

never once ever stripped one and ive removed and put on tens and tens of them over the years
