if this engine is a 1969 and has never been apart the gaskets and seals are shot.if this is a rebuild how many miles?you may have over tighten things or mabe not tight enough,if rebuilt was sealer used?

i would clean everything off again break cleaner works wipe as much oil off and if you have a buddy or girlfriend that can start the engine.you might want to start looking at the front seal in the timing cover behind the harmonic balancer.the fan is going to blow oil every were

yeah ,it sounds like your needing to replace something if it leaks so bad you can't tell were it's coming from.is it dripping or a stream, how much oil do you think you lose idling for say 5 minutes?
i don't recommend stop leak but seal sweller used to work on old rope main seals.

In order of things to fix (easiest to hardest, and most likely to least likely) [more or less]

Valve cover
Timing cover
Oil pan
Oil sending unit
Front seal
Rear seal

I`m not sure if this is your issue, but I`ll give it a shot. Right beside the harmonic balancer on both sides you will see 2 holes on each side one on top of the other. On the passengers side upper hole is there a bolt in place? If not this is where the leak is coming from. The upper hole on the passengers side is directely connected to the fuel pump rod which lubes it. If there is no bolt here oil will be everywhere as it will come out of the hole. If there is no bolt in place use a short one so it doesn`t make contact with the fuel pump rod.

Is it possible to pull the coil wire and have a friend crank the engine over while your looking for the leak? I'm thinking if your cranking and not running you will slow the leak down enough to see where it is coming from.

Better yet is to remove the distributor and use a oil pump priming rod on a drill and pressurize the system to see where the oil is coming from. That way you are not cranking the motor over and having moving parts while you are looking around, Safer!!
