305 to 350 Parts swapping

My Grandson is swapping out a 305 sbc in his 86 pickup-C10. He is installing a 350 sbc. Just what 305 parts are interchangeable on the 350?

1. Distributor?
2. Transmission?
3. Harmonic balancer?
4. Carburetor (quadrajet 4bbl)?
5. Any other hidden problems lurking that I should know about.

All of them are....A 305 and 350 are identical externally.....just the bore and stroke are different.

stroke is the same, just bore is different.

hi there welcome to the forums.,

everything swaps,

down to the bare blocks,

especially '80-'85(minor changes in 80 such as oil stick moved to other side of the block and is different length)

and in '86 up there was a crank and seal change.

the flexplate/flywheel wont swap between 85 down and 86 up

different crank flange pattern shape

86 up is smooth round crank end with a new one piece rear main seal

'85 down is large flange type with the old two piece rear main seal design


so if the 350 is an 85 down then you will have to get another flex plate or flywheel, one from an '85 older v-8, or old L-6 engine such as 230, 250, or 292, etc.

Most of what you've read is correct, but unless you also change the timing chain cover, don't try using the stock harmonic balancer, they are different.

Since it`s a 86 is the computer going to be used or has it been bypassed?
