Hi,
The 292-312 were built until 64, but why would you want to use either of these engines? the only good thing about the 292 is the steel crank, you would be far better off using a 289-302. Rich |

The 312 has weak main webbing. The trick is to put a 312 crank into a 292. Much stronger.

I had one of these a few decades back, it made me so happy I sucked the 292 out and put a 430 in. That'll put a grin on your face. Today you need to shop the Lincoln line at the local wrecking yard for a 460, get the tranny and the slip yoke too, it'll make the swap a ton simpler for ya. Bogie |

312's are getting fairly rare. The 4V was only available from 56/57 and the 2V from 58/60 as a MERC base engine.

312 engine choice
Poor choice and hard to find parts for anymore. Why? Because they were doomed from the start for lack of good oil pressure and oil circulation. Some of the older guys will remember this. Western Auto and Sears, Firestone stores used to sell an external oiling kit to get oil to the rockers because the original set-up kept running them dry and they would fail after only a few thousand miles. I can remember my father hooking up the external oiling system years ago. It kinda worked but the oil pressure idiot light would flicker constantly. He finally gave up on the thing and put a piece of black friction tape over the light and drove it till it dropped dead. And it did!
The 292 block was much better than the 312, as far as my own ownership of several. They ran forever, but most rusted away before the engines wore out. 302 is a much better choice... bullet proof, ltsa parts and cheap to run and maintain.... Plus all the modern transmissions and add ons are available for them. |
