86 Ranger 2.3 AT PS TBI Continued DEQ Failures / Oil Pan Leak

This Ranger has an original 84,000 miles on it. It runs and drives like new with the following exceptions. New plugs, wires, cap, rotor, filters, TBI removed and cleaned to improve idling, misc greasing etc., Recently we just put a new head and basically a complete top end (new cam & rockers) on it due to a burnt valve. The only thing that I haven't actually changed yet is the 0X sensor in the exhaust manifold which I have and will change this coming weekend. I bought a direct fit replacment not a universal. I have been told that this model year is notorious for emissions failures? Other than the parts recently changed there are no further adjustments that can be made that are not made by the computer? I did have a new cat and muffler installed. I'm hoping that the experience within Hot Rodders can once again come to my rescue as done with my 68 Mustang electrical problem recently which is still running strong!

Problem #2) The oil pan has an oil leak in the front that pukes the oil out almost as fast as it goes in. Is it really necessary to pull the engine to replace the pan gasket? I'm pretty sure it's not the front crank seal. I don't know which is worst, not being able to license it or chance burning it up from lack of oil. The little truck runs and drives so well and provides the perfect vehicle for the lady that uses it to help rescued dogs from abusive environments. I am helping with no compensation on my behalf as she is also disabled and financially strapped liked many Americans at this time! Are there any tricks I can try to resolve this without pulling the engine? It is a 2WD, no A/C.

Thanks, John (Portland OR)

There are lots of ways to fail an emissions test. Did they give you a read out of what the values are for HCs, CO, CO2, and NOx against the standard they're testing to? These numbers are the key to understanding what's going on.

Thanks Bogie, I'm getting another flunk slip this weekend and I'll post the readings as soon as I can. I've got to replace the thermostat also as it appears to be stuck open and that too will cause failure. Appreciate the come back! John
