350 starter

hey guys i need a little help.i have a 350 built and i have put 3 new starters and 3 new fly wheels.it keeps eating up the starters.flywheels are ok but i have been changing them anyway just to see.i have been buying quality parts as well.tried shimming but no good.any ideas or help would be helpful.thanks chris

Are you using the correct knurled shank bolts? Factory starter brace?

350 starter

yeah. it was in a el camino and we pulled it out and put it in my chevelle and it started this.using the same parts as i had

Also make sure the mounting surface is clean and that the mounting holes in the block aren't cracked, can allow starter to flex. Ground wires from block to engine, firewall, frame.

ok ill check that out. would it be any help to grind some off the top of the starter to make it closer to the flywheel.

I wouldn't do that. Normally you can shim the outer part to move the starter closer. Half shim. Should be able to fit a paper clip about .060" thick between the gears for correct clearance.

theres a rod spacer tool that comes with new starters to make sure you have the right distance, its about 1/8"

a drill bit works the same

large diameter flywheel for staggered bolt starter noses and small diameter for straight across bolt noses

shouldnt be having any of this trouble if you are using the right nose for the right diameter wheel/plate

no shims

One other thing to check. Make sure the torque converter bolts aren't too long and bottoming out in the TC. Will cause the flexplate to bow out of shape. Ask me how I know.
