What do you mean by rat. You do know a rat was a big block and a mouse was a small block.

The best way would be the correct journal, as you know.

Next best would be spacer bearings.

Last choice are the bearing spacers for use w/standard-type bearings, IMO.

FWIW, I took "rat" to mean "on the cheap"; "low-buck" and/or "backyard-built", not that it was meant to mean a BBC.

It makes no sense to me to de-stroke a 400 unless you're building for a certain Comp Eliminator class and there's a cubic inch to weight advantage in a certain class and you want the larger bore to unshroud the valves and make the heads work better.

I think what I'd be looking for is a local who'd trade me a good cast steel 400 crank plus boot, for my steel 350 crank.

Use the extra for whatever.

Spacer Bearings

I just called a customer last week to break the bad news to him that his 4340 cola 4" stroke crank had 350 mains. I personally will not build an engine with spacer bearings. That being said there are alot of them running around out there. But i can't prove what the longevity of them are since i will not use them in my builds.

We built them all, 383 (350 block 400 crank) a 372 (400 block 350 crank) A 350, and a 400. Hands down none even came close to the 400. The 372 was a good 1/8th mile engine, but sucked at mud racing. The 350 was very strong. the 383 was okay, but nothing like we expected it. The 400 put them all to shame easily. If I had a 400 block it would be built a 400. No sense in sacraficing any cubic inches as thats the same as wasted power. Oh yeah and one more thing, and I think many will agree, once you go 400, you never go back.

i'll try to find some one to trade me first but if all fails i gess i'll give a go at the spacer bearing i do agree with you all about making a 400 or always go bigger no down size i changed my mind half way thrue my bild and in stead of sending the 350 to the shop i sent my 400 going 30 over i think it should clean up good and deck was actully level hard to find on a 400 and being aline honed dose any one want to trade me cranks
