1978 F250 4x4 390 Engine swap HELP
Hi,
I have a 1978 F250 4x4 (with power steering) that I inherited about a year ago. It had a junk 400m(no heads/seized up) in it. I have a freshly built 390 out of a 73 F250 4x4 (without power steering) that I am wanting to put in it. I am having difficulty finding an conversion/engine swap to make this exchange happen. Does anyone know of a company out there. I can be the only one whose ever wanted to put a 390 into a 78 F250 4x4! Thank y'all for your time. Thank you guys for checking out my thread. Its cool to know that there are still people out there whom are interested an d will to help others... You Guys Rock! I had to edit this thread cause I wasn't specific in the original. The main problem I'm having is motor mounts/towers. I thought that I could pull the towers and mounts out of the 73 and they would drop right into the 78... no such luck. The frames in the engine bay are night and day different. So what i'm trying to find is a drop in mounting kit. The 400m had a C6 behind it(never thought about keeping it...will give it some thought). The 390 has a granny 4speed. I left the 390,tranny,Tcase(wich has no high/low range...just in or out) all bolted together and was hoping to drop it in as on unit. I will think about putting the C6 auto and Tcase(which has high and low range) the 390. That is mainly what i'm looking for. A way to mount the engine. I just didn't want to try to duct tape this baby together...hahaha Register now (free) or login to remove ads Last edited by vericero : 04-16-2009 at 10:07 AM. Reason: problems with engine mounts |

I didn't know the answer either, so I went to the Lakewood site to see which scattershields fit what so I could see if the bellhousing mounting holes and locations were different between the 390 and the 400. Looks like this....
#15220 fits '68-'78 351M, 400, 429, 460. #15210 fits '61-'70 390, 406, 427, 428. This tells me that the rear of the motor is different 390 to 400 and that a 400 trans will not mate up to the 390. Now, if you wanted to match up a 390-compatible transmission to the 390 motor and do the swap as an engine/trans combination, you could make it work with some scouting around for mounts. http://www.lakewoodindustries.com/P...&minselection=0 Sell the trans that's in the truck now to someone who needs one to fit a 351M, 400, 429 or 460. Easiest thing to do is find a /76 FE PU in a salvage yard and take the FE frame mounts and insulators (better yet, it will be a complete source of conversion parts). The bell pattern is specific to the FE also.
