i had this problem. i have a 84 chevy k10. 350. bored and cam. gearhead down the street said that the first few times may work fine...then all of a sudden the starter gets jarred sideways. the best remedy is 1: replace the starter bolts. and 2: get a starter rear support bracket. i put a rear bracket on it. this bracket is described better earlier in this same forum. i havent had a single problem since...except now ive got a charging system problem. my batt drains itself and the starter doesnt want to crank and stay engaged...

hope this helps!!! let me know.

Starter problems

I know it's a long shot, but has anyone thought that maybe he's lost the thrust in his crank or bearings?Try pushing/pulling the crank forward, then hitting the starter; do this after it's done it's " won't engage/grind" thing. What's floating around in the engine oil? Second, the block is'nt damaged/repaired in the area of the starter mounting surface is it? Common area for damage on Chevrolet blocks. Is the surface true? I've known people who gave up on a particular block due to starter problems and after using a different block the problem goes away. Everyone else here seems to have covered everything else. Good luck

Starter blues

I never saw the original post and also know this post is old as dirt but the big problem is most starter catologs no longer list the starter with the .080 shorter housing that move the starter driver teeth into the flywheel. Ten years ago I got my Dually dirt cheap because of this problem. I filed .080 off the bottom of the stareter with an aluminium file started it and drove it home. Getting the correct one from Car Quest required a call to thier supplier who had the information for the correct part #. A few years ago at 8 pm the starter failed. Back then AutoZone had the notes but no longer do. I posted today bec0uase the starter just failed a 5pm after Car Quest closed. Napa and Auto Zone catologs no longer have that information in thier catalogs. I already search my old reciets with no luck. Tomorrow morning I will have to swap the modified nose cone to a good used starter until I find correct rebuilt starter.
