327 engine ticking

HI I have a chevy 327 engine with hydraulic lifters the one lifter is making a ticking noise I started the engine adjusted the lifter until the ticking stops then locked the nut let run 5 miniutes and it starts ticking again, I put another nut untop of the locking nut ,maybe it was not holding but it still start ticking . I think it maybe the stud is coming out? it is the same height as the other ones I put a straight edge from one to the other they are the same height, could it be a bad valve?
what can i do to stop this ticking it is only one valve the exhaust valve.
Put screw studs in ?

You could pin the stud if you want, or swap to screw in studs.
I've seen screw in studs with poly locks back off because the top of the screw in studs weren't machined flat.

Try setting the valves and see if the stud is pulling, measure each time the ticking returns. Is there any way one lifter is bleeding down? Excessive lifter bore clearance or..?

More likely, it's a bad valve inside the lifter that's letting it leak down under valve spring load. A test would be to stop the engine with that valve open and see what it sounds like in the morning. Setting like that with the valve open will keep a load on it overnight, if the internal lifter check valve is leaking it should be quite noisy on start-up.

Have you checked the rocker arm?....it may be cracked and getting worse each time you set the valves. If not that have a look at the number of threads showing....If there are more showing on that one, the lifter is collapsing.

I am thinking of putting a new cam and lifters in my 327 what is a good setup for me what type of cam is a reliable one comp, crane what lift is good, one that has a nice lopey sound but stil idles . and how much trouble is it to install would I need to remove the intake manifold or can I get the lifters out through the push rod hole
I can buy a stroker 383 for 2k would that be cheaper to do less work.?
