best way to fix "chipped" paint?

Hello all,
Another question to reveal my ignorance. The paint on my dash, ('56 panel truck), is about 20 yrs. old or so. It shows no signs of peeling, it is just faded and not the color I want. My intent is to scuff and paint, but there are a couple of small chips, (1/8" or so in diameter), in very visible areas. While I have stripped and epoxied nearly the entire EXterior, I wanted to avoid the mess of stripping the dash to bare metal. If the dash was painted in the same manner as the exterior, then there are a couple coats of primer and a couple of coats of paint. What is the best way to fill these chipped areas? Spot prime until it sands level? spot putty? As always, I appreciated the help,

no reason to go to bare metal. use a little spot putty to fix the chips.

I also suggest a spot putty, but not the old skool lacquer types. Use the new 2k spot putty and it won't turn into a problem later.

Same here....Two coats of putty applied with a razor blade works pretty well on small stuff...

Thanks guys ....trying to work smarter, not harder here. Of course, sometimes it takes both..
