If you had the distributor out and changed the wires it more then likely is out of time or wires crossed up. JMO

Qjets are not junk and not hard to tune. They got a bad rep from the leaking plugs years ago but actually are pretty neat carbs. Recheck #1 TDC and firing order as well as direction of rotation if you are not used to GM stuff. It may just be way advanced.

let me explain an easy way to set ur timing find top dead center for number 1 cylinder drop in ur distrubutor having ur rotor point to the number one cylinder, then follow ur firing order from there.

i know how to do tdc this old motor has a 6 side distributor gear and it realy dont point at number 1 its past or befor number 1. I have it at past #1 going counter clock im going to check tdc again and set it befor counter clock and see what i get and i will also check the intake and make sure their is nothing down in their. Today i put like 24 oz of gas down the carb today and cranked it forever checked the plugs and only 5 6 and 8 had very little gas on them so alot of stuff still to check.

First, the Olds distributor gear is like any other. The OIL PUMP DRIVESHAFT has six sides, but this is unrelated to how the distributor gear meshes with the cam. Once the distributor is in the block, you MIGHT have to rotate the engine slightly to get the oil pump driveshaft to line up so the distributor goes the rest of the way in. By the way, the Qjet is arguably the most sophisticated 4bbl ever made. Those who claim it's junk usually don't have the patience or aptitude to learn how to tune it properly. |

If you are unable to tune it yourself or if you need parts....

These articles are quite dated, and contain erroneous info(there are no solid main web 403's) If youre interested in building a 403, sign up with some of the Olds sites online. You can get correct up to date info and parts from a number of Olds engine specialists around the country. BTR Olds Perfromance Rocket Racing M&J Proformance J&S Machine Wise Performance Joe Mondello's(RIP) Technical school is in Tennessee, the Mondello Family has nothing to do with Mondello Performance in California A correctly rebuilt Q-Jet would be the best set up, but if youre really set against it, then check into one of Holley's Q-jet replacement carbs. They are spreadbore design, come in 650 and 800 cfm(your stock Q-Jet is 800cfm), and are available in double pump or vacuum secondarys. Id suggest the vacuum secondaries, as they make more down low torque and also offer the most potential for higher MPGs when just cruising. |
