350 Head swap.
I have a 79 SBC 350 with flat top pistons, stock crank stock rods, 64cc 2.02 1.60 world sportsman II heads.1.5 rockers, Cam lift is 477/488. Comp springs 981-16.
My goal is to take sportsman heads off for a stroker engine, and swap the springs and a new set of seals to a set of 14014416 heads and put them on the old engine to keep it as a runner. The heads I have to swap are 14014416 305 HO, 80-85, 58cc, 1.84-1.5, 165/59cc ports, 7 bolt ex. Stock rockers, I want to swap springs, I will be useing the same cam and intake. Can this happen? Or am I crazy? Thanks

You can do it, but you'll need to retard the cam 4 degrees to compensate for the extra compression. And then you have the heads running out of breath just as the cam starts working.
Sportsman 2 heads really aren't very good. Most of the modern 180-cc heads far out-perform those old S2s. They can be decent woth 2.055" valves and excellent porting, but even then they barely equal un-ported modern 200-cc heads. Also, I myself have seen dyno results proving un-ported GM 906 Vortec heads are a hair better than S2s. Especially below the peak TQ. Sell the S2s, sell the 416s, and buy 2 pairs of Vortecs. |
