31 model a coupe patch panels

I'm installing patch panels on the lower body behind the doors and in front of the rear fenders. My problem is the panel wraps around the door post which is made of wood. I don't want to cut the door post out to weld the panel. Can I just weld up to the wooden post and then put a nail in thru and cover the seam and nail with lead? Would this hold up? Would there be issues with the paint?

I'm just a weekend body man so I need all the help I can get!

I think I would either find a way to Weld it completely or use something like this (either partially or fully)-you can just apply the adhesive, screw it on with sheet metal screws, let it cure, take the screws out and apply a little more to the screw holes (or weld them/bondo them)-it is the technology use on current Cars-
