Are you talking about a manual shift trans or automatic?

4x4 or 2 wheel drive on each truck?

More info please

dwfleming, you are new here. Please do not start multiple threads on the same subject.

I merged your two threads in to one here.

2wd to 2wd or 4x4 to 4x4, automatics should work if there both 700-R4's. SM-465 4spd from an '85 will not correctly fit a '88-'98 truck if it's a M/T. 1500's got the old Getrag 5spd that year, the 3/4 and 1 tons still got the SM-465 for 1989 and 1990 but the shifter and output are diffrent than the earlier transmissions, and of course, the trans crossmembers are diffrent

The trannies will both bolt up if that's what you're concerned about.

Of coarse one of them could be a th400 and the other a 700r4. In that case there would be more work involved such as drive shaft alterations, crossmember relocating, adding lock up controls, etc...

If they are both 700r4's, use the torque converter specific to the tranny and its a straight swap. I believe the earlier ones were 27 spline and the later ones were 30 spline.
