how is every one? got my block and crank today going to use a 400 crank is there any special machine work to be done on the crank. ordered a speed pro kit hpk-105 block kit. it has 10.34 to 1 comp. and a .447 lift 222 dur cam.pistons are hypereutectic flat. does this sound about like i am going in the right way. thanks

I'm not familiar with the kit you bought but unless it's a 383 rotating assembly you'll need to have the crank mains turned to 350 main specs, 2.450" and probably grind some in the block to obtain clearance, depending on the rods you chose. Depending on the rod length you're using, you will need appropriate pistons.
No rocket science, just use good parts and assembly procedures. I've never used hyperT pistons but if you go much more on the compression or cam and plan to "Bogart" it around town you might consider upgrading to forged pistons. Have fun... |

Yes, you can use the stock 350, 5.7" rods or go to the 6.0". The 400 and 350 have the same 2.1" rod journals. But you need the +.030" 383 pistons for the rod you're using, to have the correct pin hole location. otherwise you're deck heigth will be off, big time.
I was going to use a 6" rod in my 383 but it was rumored that the pin hole intrusion into the oil ring groove was touchy for a blown engine, and could lead to oil blow by after a while. I didn't want to chance it. |

why use a 400 crank and yes there has to be machine work done. The 400 journals are 2.65 and for a 350 you need 2.45 so they have to be ground down. Just go out and buy a 383 crank that comes pre set for the 350 and there will be no machine work needed. Im not sure if you meant that "400 crank" as in getting a kit one or not? In any case the kit ones are still 400 cranks but they are made for 383 use in mind it will save you time and in the end money.
Good luck! |

The crank, flywheel and balancer must be balanced as a unit.
The rods and pistons should be balanced also. There is allot of info in the Knowledge Base and in the Introduction to Hotrodding section it has all the sites and help for building a motor for the first time.http://www.hotrod.com/howto/51578/index.html Here is a site that tells you every combo to build a 383 with all manufactures parts and results. http://ryanscarpage.50megs.com/combos1.html Let us know how the motor runs when finished and maybe the parts you picked for building it. LOL George
