Shutting off

My friend has a 80 cutlass with a 4.6 litre v8 and it keeps running after he turns it off like it sputters then shuts off what could cause this ?

cylinder temps too high, carb too rich, timing off. This is called dieseling. Should be an easy fix. Give it a tune up and make sure its running at a proper temp.
