Which side of the cross-member?

Hi Fellas,

I'm having an "CRAFT" moment ... (Can't Remember A Fricken Thing)

I robbed this cross-member and brace from a 1976 C10 ... and I *think* that the brace in the picture goes on the driver's (torque) side of the trans.

(Larger, more detailed version of this pic is in my journal.)

Of course I sand-blasted and painted it ... so any "marks" ar long gone.

Can anyone confirm or deny my theory? Or does it matter?

Don

for that particular x-member, theres usually 1 on each side. now if it has the upward bend that goes up the drivers side frame rail, then that bracket would go on the passenger side... gl

I think you're right.

This cross-member doesn't have the (non-detachable) bent part, but the one from the 79 C20 donor truck did.

Looking back thru my journal, it looks like I had "test-fit" it using the detachable bracket to the right.

Maybe I'll make another trip to the boneyard and see if I can score another bracket ... then put one on each side.
I guess that certainly wouldn't hurt anything, and may even help to stiffen that frame. I'm expecting quite a bit of torque from that 454.

I think tnsmith is right, I know my blazer has the extra bracket on both sides and my sister in laws 70 c10 does also.

Sweet project Are you going to run an overdrive transmission with that big block?

Thanks... it's slowly coming together. I think it's gotta go on hold for a bit, while I build my OWN garage. I'm tired of imposing on friends for storage space, and it limits my "tinker" time.

I've just overhauled the TH400 from the donor vehicle, and bought a new B&M Nitrous Holeshot 2400 stall convertor to go with it.

I don't know if this truck will ever see a lot of highway time or not. Actually it might ... if I get into the "show & shine" circuit, it might travel within 100 km's (65 miles) to neighboring towns.

The closest drag strip at the south end of Calgary ... also 90 or more km's ... and I think I'd like to run it there occasionally.

Lastly, I'm not a fan of 700-R4's. I know that they can be "built" to take it, but at what cost? Perhaps sticking with the TH400 and adding a Gear Vendors OD would be a better choice. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Right now, I just want to get it together and fire that puppy up!
