Side View Mirrors: Suggestions for '54 Chevy Pickup

Anyone have any cool suggestions?

I want to put mirrors on my '54 Chevy pickup but I don't like the repo's made for a number of reasons.

I'm wondering if I can get away with something like this and be able to see:

Has anyone done anything different with side view mirrors on an old pickup truck successfully?

Thanks.

Alan

Awesome man, I appreciate your posting this. I've been trying to think of mirrors for my lil brother's 51 Shivalay RPU we're doing. That really opens up the options. Here it is this summer. I need to see if we have some more recent photos of it.

alan
my 58 truk had similar mirrors on it when i bought it eons ago.
i did not like the way they looked on the round fender truk
also they were too low and close to the truck to be useful
i replaced mine with stock repops and really like the look
personaly i vote for repops like these from brothers
or maybe this style

if you don't actually use them and only need them for legal reasons
those little lollipop rod mirrors peep mirror

i bookmarked your website 6-7 yrs ago when you were active on the oletrucks or old-chevy-trucks forums
it's been a while since i saw any posts/action from you
welcome back

I used the round brushed aluminum Sun Spec Billet Factory mirrors on my '31. They satisfy the "law", work just fine, plus are small enough that they are barely noticed. Not cheap, I found out: http://www.ssbilletfactory.com/

Thanks!

Thanks, everyone, for all the helpful info.

My truck was being restored down to bare metal and then new paint ... I just got it back a few weeks ago -- after 3.5 years!! THAT'S why you haven't seen me around -- argghhh! It's was pure misery to be without my truck all that time ... and then, after I got it back, the paint is awesome! As good as it ever gets! BUT there were a ton of mechanical and electrical nightmares I had to deal with.

Anyway, I'll be washing and waxing it this weekend and will be back on the road with it next week ... I'll be posting new pics and articles on my site, too.

MERRY CHRISTMAS to all!

i had no idea there was that many different m/c mirrors
all of a sudden all those harley guys (ok, a couple of my freinds) are alot more usefull

I've always used "peep" mirrors top mounted on all my older trucks...it's just me,but I like the look of them.

Harley Guys Are Always Cool!

:o)
There's a Harley shop near me ... I'm gonna go there and take a look. At least I can **see** what they look like (physical size, etc.); these web sites and their pics aren't the best way to visualize things.

Thanks again everyone ... it's great to be back on the boards with you guys.

I agree, peeps are definitely cool looking.

The mounts can get a little sloppy sometimes, no? How do you mount yours?

Also, do they do the job? Can you see well?

Thanks.

Quikvmax 12-24-2010 03:05 PM

Usually there are two allenheads to tighten them to the top lip....I always used 3m trim tape....stick it to the inside of the outside mount(facing in to the mirror) and that usually kept from slopping around AND kept it from eventually rubbing the paint off and giving you those pretty rust stripes every time it rained.

Beware of buying HD parts at an "offally" licensed place, the rip off factor is staggering and the quality is no better than after market elsewhere.

Here's some with different mounts and a fair starting price.

good luck.

Yes, the mounts can loosen up, but if you keep an eye on them and re-tighten them as needed, you will have no problems. As far as can you see well, no not like in a modern vehicle, but any outside mirror is better than none at all.

Another vote for stock type repops. The curvy look of the truck needs curvy/round mirrors, imo. But, whatever floats yer boat!

horvath 12-25-2010 07:39 PM

Thanks, Dan.

AntnyL: I had repops ... didn't like the look. Mine's a street rod ... but my main reason against the repops is the poor quality; I mean it couldn't get much poorer! The swivel joint rusts out BIG time and, of course, the chrome is garbage.

Whatever mirrors Harley makes is gonna be top-shelf quality, I'm sure of that.
