Simple pondering.....

I was at micky D's this evening with the brats and of course had to use the bathroom after a long drive. While I was in there, I noticed a baby changing station. Nothing unusual except that there were instructions written in Braille (sp?). Now maybe I was just tired, but I got to thinking about it. How does a blind man know when his own butt is wiped clean, let alone a babies. What would he go by, feel, smell, taste? Either way I bet he'd get **** on his fingers.

This whole politically correct crap is getting way out of hand these days.

BestMech, good to see you back. I blew thru Crossville the other day and wondered what you were up to. I'll be thru on Monday the 11th with my 8 year old grand son. PM you phone number again and I'll give you a call for a cup of coffey. We are on a week tour with the dogs, kayaks, 4 wheeler and fishing poles. No itenerary except for a small cabin on a large pond up near Red Boiling Springs. Will check out trails in Big South Fork Rec Area.

"Political Correctness" has no common sense, just like the inventors of the farce. How about the Braille on the Drive Thru ATM at banks???

political correctness

I suppose that since I have a cousin that is blind, with 3 kids, mind you, I could take offense at the comment about blind people not being allowed to have kids.
As for the braille on diaper stations, Paul agrees thats about the dumbest thing hes ever heard of as well. As he put it, hes been changing diapers off and on over the past 8 yrs. and he doesnt need a bureaucrat telling him how to do it. Having his wife tell him was bad enough. LOL.
Ive never gotten into a discussion with him as to how he knows when all the wiping is done, but Im sure they just "know". Being born without sight, or losing it does tend to sharpen ones other senses, unless those senses have also been effected or damaged in some way. As Paul also says about being sightless. Having never had sight, he doesnt miss it.
As for the ATM machines, I wondered about that til one day, I had taken him to the store, and he needed money. There was an ATM in the parking lot, so I guided him over to it, and he used it. He did comment that touch screens are a major pain.
BTW, Paul is an avid hotrodder. He and his wife have a 65 Dodge 2 dr. with a 383 that he has worked on, including swapping intakes, headers, etc. His attitude there is that it sux to have to have someone get him to the basic location so he can work. And, no, he doesnt drive the car on a regular basis.

OK, hows this?

I work in the construction field. I do TONS with ADA (handicapped) accessability.

Fire Extinguishers MUST be accessable to the handicapped. Do you want a guy in the wheelchair fighting fires, or evacuating?

Toilet partitions in schools (NY only) have to be class A fire rated, ONLY if they are plastic, yet they can be made of wood and painted, or plastic laminate applied to them.

In schools, all permanent room signage MUST meet ADA rules (federal). (Meaning braille) Yet, a directory DOES NOT have to conform. "Area of rescue assistance" signs must be illuminated and braille, mounted at 72 " above the floor MINIMUM!! How does a blind guy see an illuminated sign? How does he know where it is to read the braille?
I have YET to see a student that is blind, that did NOT have a aide with them.

In bathrooms, new legistlation (8 years ago) required that any bathroom with more than 6 stalls, had to have (2) hdc stalls. A standard 5'x5', plus an ambulatory (3'x5' with 32" doors and grab bars). Now with less than 2% of the population being HDC, why make the bathrooms 15% or higher ADA compliant?

Oh, there's more, but....

different senses

Well its like this, try it sometime with a blindfold. I am sure you will just "know" when you have taken care of all the bureaucrats with the paperwork.
Just remember, there are those that couldn't find their butt with both hands and a flashlight, in broad daylight. And they have eyesight.
There are also those that are very anally Fruedian too.

I wasn't being serious, I was being un P.C. And since this is a message board I knew I wouldn't be able to offend any blind people directly.

Trees- When you come by, I'll take you and your grandson to see the largest tree house you or I will probably ever see. This thing is seven floors tall with a basketball half court in the middle. I think you'll be as excited as the grandson. I know I was the first time I took my boys there. Sounds like you have all the basics covered for a really great time, wish I could escape with ya'.

I guess I'm the only person in the world who uses the the paper as a VISUAL indication as to whether or not the job is done.

I'm sorry, I forgot that this is a public forum and those that are Holier than thou would be reading and blessing my posts with their replies.

I better stop typing now, I can sense k-star's neck getting redder by the minute.

Not funny, but in its own way the funniest thing I've read in a while!

Good thing he's blind! { I remember this 65? Valiant from when I was a kid. I was so embarrassed of it }

What does that mean? I understand "anal" and "Freudian" but as a pair...I don't get it.

There was a tease when I was growing up, "Yonag gost duckshiante" ,Cherokee for "White man has a ****ty ***". I think that fits with the above nicely. White man has a lot of bureaucratic waste.

Here's how I see it. If you drop a wrench in the fender well and say $***! it's cussing, but if you say" Oh, I just stepped in dog ****" it's not.

Wrong, if you drop a wrench in a fender well and say ****, it's natural. Then you say a few other words if the magnet doesn't retrieve it quickly and on the first attempt.

Not reading thru every response to the thread but I want to comment on the original....BstMech....what if all of a sudden you were struck with blindness and had kids? When I was in my late teens I was introduced to a guy that was blinded at birth. He was a preemy and the nurse turned up the oxygen too high in the incubator causing blindness. Later on he had his eyeballs removed so he could wear glass eyes. He is an electronics wizard. He can build tube type 2000 watt linears for CB's What was amazing was that he could pick up an electronic tube and tell you what the number of that tube was. If you have ever seen a huge box of tubes, they all look alike. Later on he got a job at the Transportation Research Center in Marysville, Ohio. There was a huge write up in the newspaper about him. Not because he was blind and got a job there but because he was blind and was their top transmission specialist. He was tops in rebuilding transmissions. He did that for a few years. Now has an office and runs the stockroom. He had everything on the shelves marked in braille and could find a part faster than someone that had sight. He plays in a band, builds computers, has a tractor that he built for tractor pulling, got divorced a few years back and got custody of his kids. He manages all of his own money and has never had a problem. With doing that all of his life I can only imagine he can wipe a kids *** without getting **** on his fingers. For a person that has been 100% blind from birth, he can see probably more than most people.

Well then I guess he isn't really blind in the true sense of the word.

By the way guys, if any of you know of a message board where only half the members can pick up on sarcasm and dark humor, while the other half take you seriously and respond as such, let me know. Don't recommend this website, it's already in my favorites. (for the 50% that took that seriously, it's intentionally sarcastic, man I hate when I need to explain this stuff.)
