Simple Question From A Novice

I have a straight stock '78 4 bolt main 350, what would be the pros and cons to me using 20w-50 oil in it as opposed to 10w-30. I know I would probably get better gas mileage with the lighter oil but are there any other benefits to using 10w-30? Do anyone know what the manufacturers reccommendation is for a '78 chevy 4-bolt 350? I'm just really curious, thanks.

kdj, you would be better off running the 10w-30 for a few reasons. Aside from possibly getting slightly increased mileage, the engine parts will see lubrication quicker on start up and the engine will produce slightly more hp. Most manufacturers used the 10w oils in the late 70's. You always want to run the lightest weight oil that will provide the proper lubrication for a given application.

The oiling systems on Chevys are supurb.
Use a normal 30 or 40 weight, change it regularly and you will have no problems. HG
