Singer 211G156 top button?

I goto ask. My singer 211G156 machine has another button, in the center, top of the head. I've read through these posts over and over again and I get the concept of the walking foot, needle feed, compound etc. What this button does, in the same way the stitch size button works (press and hold till you feel the click) is alter where the 2 feet, needle and dog are in relation to each other. I've videoed this for you. It's set as far as you can go 1 way then the other.(if it was the stitch button it would be biggest and smallest stitch) (I do hope this all makes sense).

My bug is where to set it as I have a terrible time with the stitch and the cotton getting caught up and wound round underneath. But if you adjust it just a tad with this button its perfect for a little while then goes back to a mess.
So here goes....

What kind of thread are you using? You should be using bonded Nylon or bonded Polyester thread. Bonded thread has a lubricant built into the thread to make it feed better and smoother.

I use whatever I got thats the right colour lol
Seriously it doesn't seem to matter what I use. Most of them say 'TERKO SATIN' except for my cheap 1 which is cotton/polyester mix.
Do you know what that button is doing?
Looking at the videos,I've tried sewing both ways and they both have their own pitfalls. 1's very loud and clanky and gives me most problems but keeps the cover im sewing in place, where as 2 is quieter, smoother but stripes go off and when you 1st start wont quite catch the cover you have to start about an inch in
