Singer Model 66 ?

I've had this machine for 2 years and just recently had a chance to take a good look at it. When set to 30 stitches per inch, the material will not move. When set to 6 stitches per inch, it makes 14. I adjusted the feed dogs as per the Singer manual and it made no difference if they were all the way up or all the way down. So is this telling me that something inside is worn out? Everything seems to be tight - then again, I have no idea as to what would be acceptable tolerances.

I would join this Yahoo group:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vintagesingers/

They have a ton of technical information on old Singer machines, and one of the contributors, Bill Holman, was/is a repairman for 50 years and always has answers to tricky troubleshooting issues.

There are also a bunch of original service manuals and the like there.

OK, thanks! I'm wondering if I should use this machine as a learning too to do sewing machine repairs. It seems that they don't sell for much.

It depends... These machines were made in the 1920s in great numbers, so they are not especially rare. It was marketed to housewives the world over, and sold with revolving credit terms (one of the first consumer products routinely financed), so it is fairly common.

There is a version of the machine called "The Red Eye" which has a lot of intricate goldwork on it. In really good condition I've heard of them going for $200+ at times. The right buyer, at the right time, makes all the difference.

The old Singers that command real money are the "Featherweights" and the 301, 401, 500 models which were from the 1940s through early 1960s.

The machine is capable of quite impressive stitching through heavy material, but it isn't suitable for upholstery because it's presser foot doesn't life very high.
