The bobbin I ordered came in today, along with my daughter home from college LOL. Happy to report the Singer is running well, I adjust the thread tension to my work and once that's dialed in, it goes like bananas. I got a half hour in of seat time practice tonight, slowly getting there. Thanks to Dan, you're the best. regards, Vinny

The thread on my 111W began to shear before it comes down to the needle. Its T90 bonded nylon. Looks like the needle itself is shearng it ? causing curled up smaller threads to form and bunch up on the thread above the needle. I'm running new thread too. Gonna switch to another thread and give it a try. -Vinny

Check how you threaded the machine when you changed thread. The top thread is hung up somehow. Most of the time it's not the machine.

Thanks Dan, I'll go over how its threaded. I was working under the machine to repair the pinion gears a while back, could I have not reset the hook timing correctly, or the gears moved and I'm splitting the thread below the needle ? -Vinny

If you screwed up the timing, it would have been evident right away. My bet is still on something not right with the upper threading, especially if this started after changing thread.

Here's how I have been threading the Singer 111W , and a close up pic of the thread shearing above the needle.

There is supposed to be a thread guide right at the top of where the needle is installed. Singer 111W Needle Bar Thread Guide Part 508456 | eBay This guide makes the thread go straight up and down to the eye of the needle, instead of coming in at an angle. I'm surprised the thread didn't always get frayed like that. What size is the needle you are using? In any case, after you install the thread guide, put in a new needle.

That's a great help Dan , I'll get that part on order. I'm using a size 18 needle (135x17) Your help is appreciated. Many thanks!, Vinny

Dan, does that thread guide get held by the same screw that holds the needle in? I don't see another mounting place on my needle bar. Thanks, Vinny
