single stage or used 2 stage?
Hey guys,

I'm new to the forums here. I've spent a lot of time reading over the last month or so, but this is my first post. I'm in the market for an air compressor and do have a budget for it. I'm looking at a new single stage IR unit that puts out about 11cfm at 90psi. For about the same price, I have the chance to buy a Husky 2 stage unit the 80 gallon one at home depot, that puts out about 15cfm at 90/13cfm at 175. The seller used it to paint one motorcycle and is selling it. I really like the IR name and reputation and the fact that new has a warranty. It's hard to pass up more air for the same price though. What do you all think?

Maybe my intended uses would help. I'm in the middle of a ground up on an old car. I'm at the stage where I need to do body work(never done it before, but want to try my hands at it). So, I'll be using a DA sander, grinders, maybe sandblasting(hopefully not much), and painting.

Thanks - Drew

p.s. I really enjoy reading all the posts here...great info!!

Drew welcome to the board.

I have used a IR for the past 7+ years with no problems. I would go with the IR if I was you. I think the quality of the IR is much better than the Husky, just my opinion.

If the price is about the same you might want to consider that the IR, as good as they are for quality, is really about the bare minimum for body work at 11 CFM and you will run out of air quite often. 15 CFM is a LOT better and almost a necessity to run air hungry tools like a DA sander or HVLP paint gun. Husky is not a bad brand and if it is a good price it might be a better buy.

Having wasted considerable bucks on an inadequate system before coming here, I have to agree with oldred. Get the larger capacity system.

Definately the used 2 stage over the new single. If you buy a single stage you will be wanting a two stage before long.

Single stages suck. They are noisy, and you wai forever for them to catch up. I have an IR 2 stage 7.5 horse 60 gallon, and am thinking of getting the Lowes 7.5/ 80 gallon for my other garage where I do the paint work.

Its not overkill until you hit 20 cfm @90. Up to that point , you will appreciate every single cfm! They DO count! Unless you want to spray one pass, wait, spray another pass, wait, or DA for 10 seconds, wait 30, DA for another 10, wait 30...Gets frustrating! Go big, the first time, and you won't regret it.

Get the 2 stage. It'll work out better in the long run, when you are waiting for the single stage to catch up. More cfm, more, more, more.

I have a 2 stage devilbiss about the same size, 7 hp, 80 gallon. It still runs a bit when using my 8" orbital. I was using the one out at my dads which was 5 hp 60 gallon. Trust me running air tools for bodywork and painting, you will appreciate the larger compressor. Mine was on sale in the $700 range I believe, and don't regret spending the money for it.

You probably don't need this reminder, but somebody else might.
Read the fiine print on that thing and make sure it's 7.5 *running*. I bought one of the Lowes compressors just to get a 60 gallon tank (cheaper than buying the tank alone + shipping, GRRR) and it has 7.5HP in giant type, but 3.5HP (running) in small type. Maybe the one with the 80 gallon tank, like you're talking about, has a different motor, though. (BTW, I sold the compressor and motor off that system for $100 so the 60 gal. tank ended up costing me $327).

well, I think I'm going to try to get the 2 stage one. Ihave to head out of town for the weekend. I hope it's still available when I get back!!!

Thanks for the comments - Drew
