SlipShaft

I purchased a TH400 from a junk yard. The tranny was sent out for a full overhaul by the junkyard for another customer who backed out. The tranny does not have a slip shaft. The "slip shaft" that is on it actually has a lock nut which secures it to the output shaft therefore rendering it not a "real" slip shaft because its rigid. Does anyone know if I can just replace it with a real slip shaft?

Welcome to the board, Bob I used to live in Merrimack, NH. It was cold there

I did a ford 3 speed one time and it worked fine. I took a cutoff wheel and sawed of the threaded section. The output shaft was not splined as deeply as the shaft for a regular slip yoke, so I had to shorten the yoke about 3/4" to get it to not bottom out.

It has lasted about 10 years with towing and hauling and I have not noticed any ill effects from it.

I can't say if a th400 housing and output shaft will allow you to modify it like that. Check to see how deep the splines go and also check to see that the spline count and form is the same before you go chopping on it. The tailshaft housing should unbolt, compare the shaft and housing to your existing tranny or find one with a slip yoke to compare it to.

Later, mikey
