Post Slow Acceleration, No Idle.

Stock 85 Camino
305 w/ Quadrajet
My car will not idle (have to always keep foot on gas) and it has terrible acceleration, takes FOREVER to accelerate between 1000 and 2000 rpm. However in park it revs just fine.

I have tryed unhooking the exhaust from the manifold, put on a different quadrajet, and taking all the emissions stuff off (back on now except cat).

Could it be timing, compression, fuel pump?

Any Ideas?
Thanks in Advance

I am no engine specialist, but had a similar problem when a faulty set of points was installed. It may be something on the timing side of things.
Good luck

man when it comes to an idle problem. First check out your vaccum. This had been the biggest pain in my *****. I encountered this problem on my mopar build up. after I put the thing together I found out that My intake didn't seal like it should have. The best thing is to test it with a can of wd40 spray it along the intake and around the carb while running and listen if the motor revs up when sprayed. also if you cant tell get a vaccume gage and check it for around 7 to 15 pounds of vaccum. but you need to get an idea of what kind of cam gind you gave. is this a stock cam or is it some type of hp cam? the more the over lap of the cam the worse the vaccume you will get. if no vaccum then the motor cant pull the fuel into the cylinder. let me know

Man i had the same prob in my cuda!! when I rebuilt the motor I put the old ger stall in it when it was out and when I started it up it ran fine. Then when I put it into gear it would die. man I wanted to just cry!!! About eight hours and 350 dollars later I finaly got it running again. I thought that I was going to pull out all my hair before it was all said and done. I had trans fluid in places on my body that I never thought I had. I think I still smell it on me after 3 months.

Ahhhh it's a 700R4 and when you put it in gear it takes like 5 seconds for the trannie to shift(could this be related).

That would definitely explain why it revs fine(for a 305) in park.

Would I just have to replace the stall converter to fix this????????

I put on a fuel pump and spent half hour getting fuel dumped on me while lying in dirt today. That was fun. (the oil level was really high and smelled gassy so I thought it was the fuel pump)

Now do we all agree that its the stall converter cause I need to get this fixed so I won't go crazy.

you have to be paitent my boy!!! Where it gets costly is by putting parts on it that it doesn't need!!! How strong does the motor run? In your question You explained that it would not idle, without giving it gass!! That is the first problem to solve. You have to have the motor working correctly before you should even try to tackle the transmission!!! Reason being is that if you have a major vaccum leak it will make it impossible under any type of load to run. let me know

It's about as strong as a lawnmower with 3000 extra pounds. (Not safe to drive on street slow)

I was talking about the transmission because other people mentioned that that could be the problem.

Sometimes when you first start it it will idle bouncing at 500 rpm and sometimes it won't idle at all, but either way it will stall once you decelerate.

I checked compression and every one was around 140 and one was around 90.

When I released the pressure on the compression tester on the last three cylinders some liquid (gas/oil mix i think) came out. Whats the deal with that?

So is it the torque/stall converter????

Thanks

I'm pretty sure it's the torque converter, but don't wanna spend all the money to find out it's not.

I can't find a vacuum leak anywhere.

Any ideas/opinions/comments?
