I'm in the process of reviving my 52 dodge. The block code says its a ply 218. I put a battery in it and removed the seized water pump pulled the plugs and cranked it over. After cranking it twice about 10 secs or less it wouldn't build oil pressure. I pulled the oil filter which was stuck do to sludge in the bottom of housing the scooped some out thick as tar. Then. I drained the oil pan flowed good for a couple of seconds then chunks of sludge were dripping out. I think the lack of pressure is do to this build up what can I do to clean the inside of engine I ponder filling the crankcase with tranny guild to break up the mess and draining again. I can pull the pan just wondering what your thoughts are. Thanks.
Kris.
Its a crap shoot at best.I guess decide if the engine has a value then proceed from there. If you dont care then flush it out,put in new oil and try to start. If you care, remove, take apart, clean check and repair/replace as required. Its probably full of sludge from the top down. It might run ok?
If your just looking for an easy might work kinda thing you might try soaking/flushing it in kerosene. If the engine is that slugged up it might be too late anyway. It really depends on how much time you want to spend on it and if you want to take it apart and clean it right.
If you do get it running I would run it with diesel oil. Diesel oil has more detergents to clean your engine and keep it clean. You can also run a quart of Marvels Mystery Oil in the engine, I personally only do it for a few hundred miles, MMO is thin and will evaporate more than normal engine oil but it cleans good.
I've heard of people putting transmission fluid into the crankcase for a very, very short time to use it to break everything up and then drain it, but I've never personally tried it.
Running kerosene or diesel in the engine while running is sure to wash the bearings out of the motor.
If it were mine , I would pull the valve cover, and vauum....YES Vacuum the sludge out of the top of the engine.
Then pull the pan and clean it out along with the pickup screen.
Put both back on, pan first, the pour oil over the valve train, and then put the top cover on, oil each cylinder, and crank the engine over with out the plugs in, so it spins as fast as possible.
When it pressure up, screw in the plugs, prime the carb, and you should get some action
You will need to use a synthetic oil or a conventional oil with a ZDDP additive in that oldie but goodie.
